Tell us about your childhood and your family

I have five brothers and sisters. I have a niece and a nephew now too. We’re all doing different things. We’re really close and get on really well, we’re a complete support network for each other. It’s so nice to be able to call one of them up when things all get a bit much. They understand where you’ve come from and what you’re doing, and they’re always a good reminder as to why you’re doing it. They put things into perspective for me which really helps.

When did you start playing hockey?

I started playing when I was five or six years old. It was the sport I got into at school and I just kept it up. I had a great group of friends who I played hockey with and we went through Representative Regional Hockey together. After school it wasn’t really an option for me to stop or give up hockey. When I was younger I played in a few NZ age group teams and I think that I was really enjoying it so didn’t want to give it up. Auckland really had the best opportunity for hockey so that’s why I’m studying here. I can’t do things half heartedly… except for something like cleaning my room, boring things like that.

Do you remember your first memory associated with tea?

At home, we would finish dinner and it would be like, “who wants tea?” and then “who wants dessert", so I’ve always associated tea drinking as a post-dinner treat. There’s nothing better than curling up on the couch eating dessert and drinking tea. Usually English Breakfast tea was served, nothing fruity.

How is tea part of your day and lifestyle?

I’ve definitely held on to the family tradition of a post-dinner tea! I’ve also started to introduce a morning tea, it’s a great way to wake up and start your day. I have a tea first with my breakfast, then I’ll have a coffee later on. When I’m studying it’s quite relaxing to have a cup of tea, there’s something relaxing, calming and refreshing about stopping for a cup of tea. It gives me a boost.

What are some of your favourite blends?

I’m OBSESSED with the Red Velvet. I loved Rooibos tea anyway, but this one is even better. I can’t wait to try it with almond milk and a little bit of honey. It’s a like a treat!

Do you have a tea ritual?

I think I perhaps use tea breaks a little too often while Im studying. I always want just one more! At home, I’ll always make a pot of tea. I love the fact that it keeps pouring, which is great for when you’re studying.

What do you hope to do in the future?

First and foremost, I want to get to Rio for the Olympics. I want to keep playing hockey as long as I am enjoying it. Eventually, I’d love to get into hosting events and TV presenting.
